The eagerly awaited sold-out show at On the Rocks in Helsinki on January 19th, 2024, featuring MARIANAS REST and OMNIUM GATHERUM, lived up to the hype.

Kicking off the night was MARIANAS REST, who set the stage for the wild ride to come. Their performance, though more subdued compared to the headliner, proved to be a solid and familiar experience for those already acquainted with the band. MARIANAS REST delivered a calm yet captivating show, preparing the crowd for the energetic onslaught that awaited them.

I kicked off my music photography journey for the year in the familiar and vibrant atmosphere of On the Rocks, Helsinki, where ANYALA and IN MOURNING were set to play on January 4th, 2024.

The much-anticipated headliner, IN MOURNING, the melodic death metal act from Sweden, took the stage later in the evening, fulfilling the expectations of many in the crowd. The band delivered an outstanding performance, and the personal interaction with Tim Nedergård truly elevated the impact of my captured moments from that unforgettable night.

The evening kicked off with a powerful performance by the Lahti-based band ANYALA. Despite a slight unease in their stage presence and vocals, the overall energy they brought to the stage was undeniable, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained.

As the year was approaching its end, I decided to finally hit up Kulttuuritalo (or Kultsa) on December 29, 2023, for the first time, and boy, have I been missing out. Designed by the legendary architect Alvar Aalto and hosting rock gods like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin since 1958, the venue’s got history oozing from every corner.

The lineup featured three bands I’d never caught live before. LOST SOCIETY crowned the night as the headliner and end my year of concert photography in 2023. Just like the two previous bands, LOST SOCIETY also brought joy to the stage filled with energy. But they also brought a surprise guest, GETTOMASA. A Finnish rapper who I do know by name, but I have no further familiarity with the artist. As the show had no age restrictions I was surprised how loose GETTOMASA was with his speeches because I'm used to seeing artist to chill down a bit.

That was the year 2023 wrapped for me. In total I shot 137 shows from variety of different bands, DJ, solo musicians and dance acts. The year 2024 has barely started and I've already shot my firts shows of the year, so you may expect quite a busy year for me! Humble thanks to all the great artists I've got to work with!

The lineup featured three bands I’d never caught live before. ST.AURORA was the second band to conquer the stage. This was one of the most joyful shows I've been in 2023 and was really happy to see such an energy at the end of the year. Totally wouldn't mind seeing these guys again sometime.

On December 7th, 2023, NIBIRU ORDEAL and STRATOVARIUS were set to play at Sellosali in Espoo. This was my first time experiencing a show at Sellosali, and, to be honest, it didn’t quite feel like the right venue for what STRATOVARIUS had to offer. I understand that some people enjoy seated shows, but personally, I found it to be a bit detached. Perhaps a compromise could be reached, allowing the front rows to stand while providing seating options for those who prefer a more relaxed experience toward the back, ensuring everyone can enjoy the show from their preferred vantage point.

STRATOVARIUS made a valiant effort to connect with the audience, but it felt like the venue posed a challenge for them. The crowd seemed a bit restrained, hindering the band’s usual engagement. Despite this, they delivered a setlist packed with all the classics that resonated with my nostalgia. I find myself hoping to catch them at a larger festival in the future, as Sellosali‘s stage felt somewhat confined for a band of their caliber.

The evening kicked off with NIBIRU ORDEAL, a band hailing from Kuopio. Admittedly, I’m not well-versed in classic power metal, so I won’t pass judgment on their performance.

I have never seen or photographed a gig at Bar Loose before, so there were plenty of reasons to go see JÄSTINFEKTION and BOB MALMSTRÖM‘s performances at the venue on December 1st, 2023. As a venue, I can understand the appeal for certain music genres that work well with tightly packed crowds. The place is suitable for smaller shows, but the majority of larger crowds won’t get to see much due to the very narrow space and shallow ceiling. I’m fairly tall, but when I tried to snap a few shots from the back of the room, I could barely see anything even with the camera held above my head, arms fully extended. So, I do recommend arriving early if you really want to see what’s going on.

The evening’s “bättre folk metal” headliner was BOB MALMSTRÖM. I was supposed to shoot their show at the Hellsinki Metal Festival earlier during the summer, but I barely missed it, and I made a promise that I’d try to shoot their next possible show. So, this was also me fulfilling that promise. The show was energetic and humorous from the beginning to the end. I really enjoyed the little engagement with the booze-fumed fan calling himself Conan the Barbarian, whom the vocalist Carolus Aminoff promised the stage after they were done. Unfortunately, we never got to see his performance. However, we did have another guest on stage as local rapper JAG joined for the song “Sälj Åland.”

The night was kicked off by JÄSTINFEKTION. Their name was completely unknown to me before, so I had no idea what to expect. The live performance was surprisingly engaging and felt reminiscent of some of the old punk shows I attended over a decade ago. Because I’m more accustomed to the industrial/EBM scene, most of their songs felt extremely short, being only over 1 minute or barely over 2 minutes long. Somehow, it still felt quite refreshing.
